Where are we placing our trust? / Onde estamos a colocar a nossa confiança?

Words to Live By: Believe by Debbie DeWitt
Words to Live By: Believe

Last Sunday, Pastor Tito asked us if we are placing our trust in God and in His Word, or if we are placing our trust in the wrong things. Despite everything we already know, there are people who even preach the Word of God without placing their expectations in it. These people create a negative image, even of themselves. They say life has no interest, nothing is good enough for them and gradually they walk towards isolation and emptiness. Critics and frustration become part of their lives. Since they don’t want others to suffer, which is something impossible, they carry the burden alone.
When we find ourselves in this situation, we fail to recognize the power of faith and the power of the Word of God.
Matthew 17: 20 «I tell you the truth. If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you».
The Word of God is not a good story, it is God revealing Himself to us, it is spirit and life. Jesus said «My prayer is not that you take them out of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth» (John 17:15-17).
A successful life is not a life without grief, without struggles, without tears. To be successful is to get to the end. «The end of a matter is better than its beginning» (Ecclesiastes 7:8).
2 Samuel 9 – This passage of the Bible shows us the grace of God. God wants to use this love in our lives but we often forget that there is nothing else that can be done. He has already done everything for us. And this love wants to be part of our lives, despite of the circumstances we find ourselves in. In Mephibosheth’s life, the most important thing was who he was and not the fact that he was crippled in both feet. He was the son of Jonathan, and friend of King David. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we become God’s children, regardless of the circumstances of our lives.
Paul said «You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness» (Ephesians 4:22-23). Even hearing the Word of God, we often forget who we really are. We must let God reveal us His will. «Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come» (2 Corinthians 5:17).
We cannot let the enemy place in our hearts feelings of inferiority. It is not enough to know Christ, we have to be in Christ, and this is possible through the Holy Spirit.
In Romans 8: 12-17, we can see that we are heirs of God. The inheritance of God is His love and He loves us all in the same way. But we have different gifts. And we are co-heirs with Christ. We have received the same share He has received and we can live as He has lived. That is why our expectations must be in Christ and not in things that fail. Our focus must be in Christ. And there is only one thing that impedes us of receiving what God has for us: a distorted image of who we are.
A lot more was said but, as a conclusion, Pastor Tito also reminded us that it is a privilege to know God through His Word.

This was a wonderful sermon about the world verses the mind of a Christian. We aren't supposed to go around saying "life is the pits" or being constantly morose, yet I find it particularly in the very young, who have the opportunity to bring sunshine in the world. I wrote about this many years ago and challenged young women to be happy and not participate in this world's gloom.
