The Fellowship of the Believers / A Comunhão dos Crentes

Acts 2:42-47
«They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostls. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to everyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved»
Pr. Alberto at our morning service today spoke about fellowship among believers. This passage of the Bible shows us that there was intimate companionship in the Primitive Church. But due to human selfishness, we lost this spirit of fellowship. We often tend to think that it is not possible to have that spirit again. But we must serve one another with the gifts that God has given to each one of us. When we live at the centre of God’s will, we experience a true and healthy growth. We are called to be Church and that requires commitment. There is a difference between visiting a church and being part of it. When we visit a church, we only receive but a true member of the church, not only receives, but gives and compromises himself with the ministry of the church. The members of the church must have fellowship. The Word of God is full of instructions as to how we can have fellowship with one another.
To develop true communion in church, we need:
1 – Sincerity. We have to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) even when we want to do exactly the opposite. Some people are afraid of having communion with other people because they don’t want to show their frailties. But we cannot wear masks. We shouldn’t avoid speaking truth in fear of offending someone but we must be careful and not speak the truth so coarsely that we don’t display love at all.
2 – Humility. Arrogance and obstinate pride lead to the building of walls but whereas humility builds bridges. Pride doesn’t let us grow, be transformed and help other people.
«If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.» (Philippians 2:1-3)
3 – Gentleness. We must be patient with those people that we don’t like for some reason. God places those people in our lives so that we may grow, but also to give us an opportunity to help them.
«Let your gentleness be evident to all» (Philippians 4:5)
4- Confidentiality. For a true communion in churches, we must guard what has been entrusted to us and turn away from godless chatter (1 Timothy 6:20)
5 – Perseverance. It is very important to have regular contact with one another. We should develop the habit of being together very often (Acts 2: 46)
Actos 2:42-47
2 – Humildade. A arrogância e o orgulho obstinado criam muros mas a humildade constrói ponrtes.
